Jason Shih - Wind

cast bronze - 74 x 32 x 48 cm

Abstraction of Nostalgia – Artist Statement by Jason Shih Sculpture is to interpret the beauty of light and shadow, rhythm and volume through the visual techniques of color, shape and texture. The qualities that the creators of sculpture pursue to touch people's hearts are actually as abstract as temperature and smell, but rich in profound penetrating power. This aura that directly points to people's hearts, and the aesthetic sense that makes people enter the drama in resonance, may also be like nostalgia, embodied in the nostalgia of seeing things and thinking about them, and the timid expectation of being close to the hometown. Sea breeze, mountain mist, morning sun, sunset, in addition to shape and color, there is also the memory of temperature. Cooking smoke, hot soup, wooden tables, pottery cups, the echo of the smell is the gradual tone of nostalgia. In people's daily aesthetic experience, the memory of temperature and smell accompanied by touch often becomes a kind of fuse to revisit the journey of old dreams. The work involved in sculpture creation is to "condense" and record all kinds of beautiful presence in this beautiful time and space in an appropriate way and with true emotions. As a sculpture creator, Jason Shih likes to experience the taste of life with perceptual observation in the subtle moments, and also likes the ever-changing situation of game shapes in the poetic imaginary space. For Jason Shih, art creation is to share various moods and stories in daily life.

Haeley Kyong - In Pursuit of Invariable - oil on canvas

27″ x 27″

I focus on art that plays with simple shapes, often eliminating extraneous information in the hopes of bypassing our internal censors and touching our core emotions. I believe strongly in creating art that is much more than the sum of its parts and that the right combination of color and shape can come to represent any physical object or nonphysical idea.

Ed Tomney - From No Known Verse

mixed media - 20'' x 16''

I work in concept-based suites of visual works. These examples are what I refer to as rain paintings where layers of carbon, graphite, soot, and glue are applied to surfaces and then exposed horizontally to exterior conditions that span several days. During this condition, wind patterns, rain drops, dust and various atmospheric conditions etch into the top layers of the facade creating pointillist markings, abstract tonal cascades and areas of bleached whiteouts. At times, the images created by this process suggest celestial bodies, other times networks of molecular spheres. The final phase involves bringing the works indoors to the easel where tones and washes of paint are applied emphasizing the dark to light extremes of these weathered surfaces. In creating this work, what starts out as a chance-operation concludes with the rendering by the hand.
