Grey Cube Gallery proudly presents the third Patterns online art show for the month of October 2023. The show encompassed a range of artistic styles and mediums (oil on canvas, acrylic, watercolor, charcoal, ink, collage, photography, digital). Each submission has been judged based on the following elements of artistic expression: orginality and quality of art, overall design, creativity, interpretation of the theme, demonstration of artistic ability and usage of medium. Out of all entries, 77 artworks were shortlisted for inclusion in the show. The competition attracted entries from many countries across the world: USA, Canada, Italy, Greece, Australia, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Armenia, Isreal, Japan and India. Enjoy the show and thank you for expressing an interest in our competition.

Holly Boruck - Floral Abstract 1

gouache on paper - 12'' x 12''

In my Floral Abstracts series uses the formal qualities of color, shape, line, rhythm and patterns to create playful and energetic compositions. I'm interested in exploring the balance between abstraction and realistic imagery, creating harmony and balance that is surprising and dynamic. The point at which an image becomes completely non-objective is a fascinating threshold. I'm engaged with investigating endless and evolving combinations of compositional shape, color and patterns and embracing the interplay of these qualities while maintaining a distinct, yet subtle sense of detail. My goal is to create bold yet elegant work that evoke beauty, visual poetry and a sense of joy.

Robert Obier - Artefact Media

mixed media - 36″ x 22″

My exploration of form is rooted in my passion for design, invention and technology. From the artful drawings of Leonardo Di Vinci to the computer generated creations of Industrial Light and Magic, I am inspired by the human imagination and I strive to understand the hidden principals that shape our understanding of the world and are the genesis of our best creations. My work explores the fusion of the disciplines of architecture, industrial design and fine art. Each piece is as much a realization of an abstract design concept as it is a unique work of three-dimensional art. A strict and systematic organization of components define this work and manifest a distinct unifying methodology that has both physical and spiritual origins. At first glance, the geometric forms seem strangely familiar as if seen somewhere before - but where - when? Upon closer examination - perhaps the designs are remnants of some distant and secrete civilization or even an, as of yet, unknown and mysterious future. The forms are intentionally abstract giving shape to a brief moment of design inspiration. The final sculpted artwork is derived from an initial “thumbnail” sketch. The preliminary shapes are explored and refined through multiple iterations as 3-d computer models. The work combines the "tried and true" techniques of old-fashioned craftsmanship with today's most advanced rapid prototyping technologies such as CAD modeling, 3-D printing, and CNC fabrication. From creation through completion this dichotomy of ‘handmade’ and ‘computer generated’ informs the development and execution of the work. Particular finish applications such as weathering and rust recall an ‘earlier time’ in the story of certain pieces - the scars of a past life. Nevertheless, the work has a timeless quality - seeming to exist in the past, the present and the future - simultaneously.

Cher Pruys - Manhole Art 2

acrylic - 6'' x 6''

Cher Pruys, ASAA SCA, IGOR, AAPL, CSAA, AMS, LMS, OSA, MAA, CFA, NOAPS, PSOA, AWA., AAOA. "To take my inner visions with my hands and create a work of art for you the viewer .... That is the ultimate in self expression." I am very drawn to shiny surfaces as well as transparent objects, especially when the lighting brings them to life. I look for beauty in everyday objects that most people take for granted or just don’t truly see them as they are. The seemingly boring and mundane subjects can truly be like magnets if portrayed in the right light. Old rusted objects are one of those magical subjects!

Oana Anastasiu - Leaf on Black

ink on paper - 30 x 30 cm

I graduated National University of Arts Bucharest, as a mural artist. Usually I paint with oil colors, but I also experiment with different mediums, such as ink, watercolor, charcoal, acrylic. For this competition I choose to send two of my 10 series in ink, they are worked as a composition using patterns, such as leaf or points, starting from the patterns I tied the composition with little lines. This series expresses my search for different types of forms, to include on my further works. As I believe practice and sketches help me evolve as an artist. It was interesting for me to experiment and find new ways of using something so simple as a point to create a composition.
