ABSTRACT ART SHOW

Grey Cube Gallery proudly presents the third Abstract online art show for the month of February 2023. The show encompassed a range of artistic styles and mediums (oil on canvas, acrylic, watercolor, ink, photography, digital, gesso, print, clay). Each submission has been judged based on the following elements of artistic expression: orginality and quality of art, overall design, creativity, interpretation of the theme, demonstration of artistic ability and usage of medium. Out of all entries, 143 artworks were shortlisted for inclusion in the show. The competition attracted entries from many countries across the world: USA, Canada, Poland, Greece, UK, Thailand, Japan, Germany, Lithuania, Hong Kong, Italy, France, Turkey and Venezueala. Enjoy the show and thank you for expressing an interest in our competition.

Pernel Berkeley - Upon My Return

acrylic on wood - 51'' x 48''

The trajectory of my work has consistently been directed by a desire to create a visual language which reflects a range of my interests. A youthful fascination with the Bauhaus Movement exerted a lasting influence on my work, inspiring me to find my own path. Although the forms I choose continue to evolve, the use of color is absolutely fundamental to my work. Combined with choices concerning the impact and interactions of shape and form, I have attempted --and continue to attempt-- to produce an original and unique visual language. Over many years guided by this principle I believe I have found a means of producing a thought-provoking, heightened visual experience.

Tore Terrasi - Line Abstract - 3 Bodies

digital drawing - 17″ x 24″

“A line is a dot that went for a walk.” - Paul Klee This work is part of the 'Lines' series. The 'Lines' series uses the simple visual metaphor of a meandering mark to represent the complex notion of a life’s journey. Each compositional element is composed of a single non-overlapping line. Between each end point is a series of curves and bends creating a densely and meandered form. On the rare instances in which visual elements intersect each other Moiré (interference) patterns start to emerge creating a visual complexity greater than the sum of its parts. The simplicity and abstraction of these forms lend themselves to an open interpretation. The compositions demand full attention and focus. Though the labyrinths can be scanned over and taken in as a whole it is only through the disciplined and time consuming journey from end point to end point in which the art is fully experienced. The series spans drawing, printmaking, digital, laser-engraving, typography, and performance.

Ed Tomney - Sound Cast

carbon, ink, oil on canvas - 14'' x 9''

I work with concept-based visual images inspired by a combination of direct observation, photo research, dream imagery and physical processes using sound. “Sound Cast #4” uses a chance operation technique where an audio speaker is submerged in a liquefied stone casting mixture. The speaker broadcasts a sound of a repeated spoken word phrase. As the stone casting cures, the vibrations from the speaker sculpts fissures and formations which are enhanced with the addition of carbon and rust particles into the casting mixture. This creates a voiceprint image formed by sound waves. “Ternary” depicts 3 spheres in a state of flotation rendered on a worked surface of subtle monochromatic tones. During the work phase of this piece, the image is first created, then reversed with solvent washes and then regenerated with multiple layers of carbon and oil paint over the original drafts so as to create a visual work with a sense of history; of being born, vanquished and then reborn much like an archival discovery. I often use variations of painting-drawing technique where combinations of carbon, charcoal, graphite, oil paint, glue and ink are applied in multiple sequential layers that create richly worked surfaces of subdued monochromatic tonality that balance a thin line between photographic depiction and the work of the hand. These works emphasize dark, atmospheric visions that speak to time passage, mortality with a sense of an ephemeral moment and a fleeting impression.

Robert Obier - Citadel

mixed media - 35.5'' x 53.5'' x 5''

Throughout the ages the master builders of the great civilizations sought to discover an organizational discipline that could provide the blueprint for achieving integrity, order and beauty in the architecture of the built world. No matter the stylistic distinctions of time, at the most elemental level, the relentless and elusive pursuit was to discover and to apply the laws and the principals of unity - the most fundamental tenet of creation. Many years and many dreams have dominated my quest to unravel the secretes of this unifying code and to create a world of architecture that would fulfill the vision of my own inspirations. A majestic and sacred place A world of order and beauty that would never come to be An unknown and unbuilt world Existing only in the depths of my imagination Now, through my art, I strive to capture the mystery of this unseen world to present, through an abstract lens, relics of what never was and fragments of what might have been. The work emerges from a doctrine, both ancient and timeless, existing only for a moment and yet perhaps forever.
