I love walking through the woods searching for a glimpse of nature consisting of a little something extra, what I call ‘a purple leaf’ or inspiration, for my natural still life colored pencil artworks. I am fascinated by natural objects composed by nature, time and conditions that reveal this uniquely beautiful but seldom noticed natural world. The aesthetic beauty of leaves, diverse in types, shapes and colors, combined with elements of earth, water and stone, are my purple leaf and the reason I look forward to discoveries found with each step and with every new step through the next patch of woods. Frank Lloyd Wright said it best: “Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you.”While the foliage of woodland trees keeps me returning to the natural world, it’s the beautiful organic lines, the rich earth colors, the dramatic lighting, and the interesting textures that keep me there. I love to hear the sound of leaves rustling in the wind, the smell of moist soil, and a feeling of tranquility while walking through the woods. Nature does not stand still and my artworks capture special fleeting moments of beauty, of absolute wonder, and serenity of nature in my still life artworks.

The mystique and beauty of Florida are the elements that inspire me to bring a canvas to life capturing those special and magical times of day. Painting the raw splendor and energy of Florida’s natural environment, allows me, as an artist, to share with others the wonderment I feel while observing God’s craftsmanship. Whether I am creating a painting of clouds, oceans, landscapes, or birds native to Florida, I want to bring to life the light and inspiration I find that makes my work and spirit come alive with color and emotion. My passion is driven by the desire to create realistic expressions depicting the divine majesty of God’s creations. It is in quiet places and natural environments, away from crowds, traffic and buildings, that I find the peace and inspiration of nature to energize my spirit and soul. I love painting this tropical paradise so others can savor and enjoy it with me.

I seek to share images with which I has a strong and instinctive personal connection. Images may be simply documentary, invoke a sense of time and place, or resonate as an abstract blend of color, shape or form. Others provoke an indefinable question that does not readily yield answers without further study and reflection. My creative process follows an intuitive yet patterned path, searching for the combination of elements that produces an instinctive but undeniable connection. Most often the images that provoke the strongest connection are those that do not produce an immediate reaction but provoke a response through repeated contact and consideration over time. I have exhibited widely in local, regional, and national exhibitions have won commendations for merit ranging from Honorable Mention to Best in Show. My photographs were also selected to hang in the Michigan Governor’s Mansion as part of a year-long exhibition highlighting State of Michigan artists.

Cameron Scott - Pictish stone in my back garden

The carvings are about places and memories - places the artist has been, which have influenced and mean much to him, and these are overlaid with his memories all the way back to childhood. The carving style, due to his varied artistic route, has developed outside the sculptural mainstream using, perhaps the out of fashion sculptural practice going back over the centuries of stories told in relief. Ideas for the carvings come from exploring a journey which moves through past and present, with recurring themes such as the window as a frame for memories (but also an escape/route to another life); objects from his life are presented on the black and white checkerboard marble floor of Aberdeen Art Gallery - now his own gallery/museum. The images are easily recognised, but what is the story they are telling? What is the relationship between these various images from different places, different times? Cameron’s work owes a great debt to early Renaissance painters who often used different rooms / areas / views through windows in the same picture to tell different aspects of their story; but also to the Surrealist artists who have allowed his imagination to roam freely through his life, from his childhood in North East Scotland to now living in South West England. Thus a range of places can exist within the one picture – Kintore, Aberdeenshire, his home village, his time in Italy, his present home, and also, from these places, iconic buildings such as Kintore Town Hall (which he lived across from for most of his childhood), Palazzo Vecchio bell tower in Florence and its northern near twin Bradford Town Hall clock tower. Buildings have a particular resonance with him, and litter his carvings.
