Marlene Siff - Life as changeable as the seasons

I am concerned with communicating a sense of harmony, balance, order and spirituality. We are all confronted on a daily basis with the fragmentation of our non-linear lives, trying, as in a puzzle, to make the pieces fit together to make sense of it all. My paintings, works on paper and sculpture depict imagery of personal and global events and psychological issues. They are a reflection of the world we live in, expressed through geometric shapes, color, light, space, texture, edges and movement, each interplaying with one another engaging the viewer to participate. The multi-dimensionality and multi-layering of my work reference what one must uncover to penetrate the illusions of reality in order to reach the mystery and essence of the soul. In my body of work entitled Elements of Peace, I embarked on a series of white paintings (in addition to the black paintings and paintings in color) that abandoned my signature bold palette. The white paintings pay homage to people who have been affected by war. White is soft, quiet, spiritual, unadorned and full of infinite possibilities. My intention was to create an architectural space for rest, retreat, connection, reflection and identification. The love of my family, gardens, ballet, music, and a profound interest in world issues have always found their way into my work. In my new interactive body of work 7 Finely Tuned, in progress, I have decided to formally bring back color and embrace music in my paintings.

My narrations deal with lights. In order to depict them I have produced reflections, transparencies and elements that take place beyond the mere description of facts… My work also lends itself to different readings, such as metaphors or the notion of the spirit of the times... as well as that particular peace which is beyond the end of things.

Drawing and painting have been my favorite things since childhood. I was Born 1957 in Tyrol / Austria, live in Wörgl and work here in my atelier that was created in 2018. My life changed in 2006; at a workshop I was shown how to use acrylic paint and I was immediately enthusiastic about it. As a result, I attended numerous courses and workshops at home and abroad and was able to learn and learn many different painting techniques. Self-taught, I am constantly developing and learning more and more. It is always fascinating for me when I bring colors onto the canvas and forms and structures emerge, sometimes in many layers and processes. With my diverse and colorful works I want to touch the viewer and convey joy and harmony to them. I really enjoy experimenting and I am always open to new things. I paint whatever I feel like and think of. I let myself be inspired by everything that surrounds me and by the beauty of nature. This creates pictures in different subjects. I am inspired by people, especially women, cities and villages, as well as animals, flowers and landscapes. Collages, abstract pictures and pop art are created. On canvas, wood, cardboard or paper. In acrylic, tempera or oil. I recently discovered synthetic resin for myself, it refines the works of art with a fascinating high gloss.

I have always loved photography, but never believed it would become my career. Many years ago, I went to China on a business delegation. A friend had brought along his new DSLR and I became fascinated. I decided to learn photography. I studied with several photographers and took workshops in Kolkata and London. That’s how it began. As I started taking pictures, I realized that I love taking candid shots of people and that I have always been fascinated with the possibility of freezing a moment for posterity. Walking around the streets of Kolkata, I constantly see new things. I enjoy street photography more than any other form because of the unexpected nature of it. While taking pictures, I am amazed at the people I meet. I see the happiness on people’s faces and experience their immense openness and hospitality. At no point do I feel unsafe, even while shooting in the middle of the night. People are very friendly and I am amazed at the number of times I have been pulled out of a crowd of people to move ahead and take pictures. Slowly I have fallen in love with the city of Kolkata and the people whom I have met. My technique and style is simple, candid, and unobtrusive. My career goals are for my work to be more widely exhibited in galleries and museums. As I devote more and more time to photography I find that I have ample, diverse subjects not only in Kolkata but also in my various travels around the world.
